SUNGGYU
Q: What do you think it would be like if you were to leave Infinite?
A: I think our popularity wouldn’t have much of a difference (laughter). Although there are fans who like my music and even my personality and looks, I don’t think it’s the to point where it influences Infinite’s popularity. But you should know this. If I wasn’t here, the Infinite of right now wouldn’t be here either. Popularity isn’t everything. You need someone who can grasp onto the team as a hyung and tell them bitter things as well. And you also can’t ignore my capability as the main vocalist.
Q: Your capability as the main vocalist, how many points would you give yourself out of 100?
A: I carefully think I’m around 80 points. Although I’m not spectacular at singing, I believe that I understand around 80% of the emotional aspect of Infinite’s songs.
Q: Is there something you regret saying in a past interview?
A: Nothing at all. Thoughts change over time, so whatever I was thinking at that moment was right. Something I regret slightly is saying bad things about our company in an interview where we could remain anonymous. Because the aftermath of that… (laughter). Even when I ask something seriously from the company, they accept it as a joke, so I regret that a bit.
Q: What do you think about the comments that your solo promotions weren’t good?
A: There are many people who have a misunderstanding of something I said to be funny on a variety program, but my album didn’t fail. Also, more than anything, I’m content because I did what I wanted to do. And I’m also proud that I was able to work with my idols, Nell hyungs. It was a good try and a good experience. And the profit was better too.
Q: If you had to change one thing that makes Infinite, what would it be?
A: I would like the break the partial thinking that Infinite only sings with melodies from the 90’s with old hairstyles and retro sounds.
Q: Do you think that you haven’t matured yet?
A: I hope that I haven’t. Differing from people my age who worry about the present and future, I already have a job. Due to that, I started saying ridiculous things to my friends along the way. “A road isn’t something you find, but something you make” or “It doesn’t work because you keep thinking that it won’t work. Believe in yourself.” I really hate myself for saying these things. I don’t want to mature.
Q: What do you think the reason of your existence is?
A: I want to believe that I was born to sing, but I don’t think that’s a perfect answer. I think music is only one part of the reason, and I think I’ll be able to figure it out once I meet the person I love later on. Because that person could be the reason of my existence. Haha.
Q: If you were to pick out something that girls do that you don’t understand, what would it be?
A: Even after being very close friends, girls quickly become angry at each other then become friends again, and then they repeat that. I don’t understand that. When I ask “Weren’t you guys not close?”, they say that they made up, and when I ask “Weren’t you guys close?”, they say that they recently fought…
Q: Have you earned the amount of money you wished to earn?
A: I still feel like it’s far. The same dream for all 7 members is to buy our mothers a house, but no one has made that amount of money yet.

SUNGJONG
Q: What do you hear most from people you meet for the first time?
A: “You’re a good-looking boy”, “You’re pretty”.
Q: From all the clothes you wore onstage, which one did you really dislike?
A: An silver outfit that looked like a hairtail fish that I wore on a dance battle during a Lunar New Year special program.
Q: Something you wouldn’t be able to do even if someone gave you 10 billion won?
A: I don’t think I would be able to raise a spider. If I had to touch it against my will, I would be able to, but I don’t think I could raise it. Although I like other animals or reptiles, I’m really scared of spiders.
Q: Is there something you regret saying in a past interview?
A: It wasn’t during an interview, but I used to dance girl group dances on variety shows without people even asking me to. To this, I think, ‘I should’ve only showed it occasionally, why did I show that dance whenever we went on a show’.
Q: A positive point as a musician that only you have?
A: I heard that my voice tone is good. When I hear my voice, I think, ‘I should work harder. There’s still a long way to go’.
Q: Does being a member of Infinite make you feel like your dream has come true?
A: I always feel like I’m currently dreaming. Because I’m living the life I wanted to live. The fact that we’re taking a pictorial like this today also makes me really happy. I think to myself, ‘I picked this life well. Even if I was tired, I held up well’.
Q: Aren’t you tired and exhausted?
A: Besides not being able to sleep and eat, I’m fine. But since my face swells up easily in the morning, the fact that I have to starve at night and endure with vitamins if we have a schedule the next day is difficult.
Q: Is there a midnight snack you think of at that time?
A: There are a lot. Chicken, hamburger, chocolate chip cookies which I like, fruit, bibimbap, and I really think a lot about cup ramyun.
-
WOOHYUN
Q: Say you’re currently really tired, your body condition isn’t good, and you don’t feel good either. But if a fan comes and asks for your signature, would you do it?
A: I would do everything. I’ve never refused to. It doesn’t even take 10 seconds to sign something.
Q: Do you feel like you were born to do music?
A: Yes. I like music, and I wish to express things through music. I always feel this.
Q: Is there a dream that you wish to really come true?
A: I want to continue making music. In a different genre from Infinite. I personally like ballads in a medium tempo. Like Jeff Bennett.
Q: If you weren’t there, what would happen to Infinite?
A: Someone else would fulfill that spot. However, the musical colors or Infinite’s charms would be affected a bit. I think our charms would decrease. Because I’m the kid with charms. Haha.
Q: Something you can’t understand about yourself?
A: The fact that I only wear undergarments at home. The moment we go home, my position as an idol is forgotten.
Q: If you could interview someone, who would you like to interview?
A: I would want to interview my parents. I want to ask them how they felt when I told that I was going to be a singer for the first time and why they believed in me till the end.
Q: All the members are currently attending college, but do you feel that college education is necessary for an idol?
A: Education is necessary. Things you learn in real life differ from what you learn at school.
Q: If you were able to personally recruit a musician or producer for your next album, who would you like to work with?
A: PSY senior since it’s a style we’ve never tried out yet. I like that carefree style. I like that music style where you aren’t suppressed and just show what you want to. I believe something like that is necessary for Infinite. We can’t just do angled group choreography forever. Don’t you think it would be funny if we did angled group choreography at the age of 35.
-
SUNGYEOL
Q: I heard that you even split up your sleeping time and exercised.
A: My body was able to be at this state from training it a bit. I was a weird combination where my body was really skinny and I had narrow shoulders, but a large face. So until our concert, I gave up my sleeping time for 5 months and only exercised. So after diligently building my body, I showed it during the concert, but I didn’t get the response that I thought I would.
Q: What was the response like?
A: I definitely thought that if I took off my clothes during the concert, I would get a response like ‘Lee Sungyeol became sexy’, but since I revealed my chest while dancing ‘Trouble Maker’ dressed up as Hyuna, I only saw comments like ‘That’s gross, racy, what is he doing’.
Q: Have you earned the amount of money you wished to earn?
A: There’s still a long way to go. My dream is to earn 50 billion won.
Q: Something you wouldn’t be able to do even if someone gave you 50 billion won?
A: If it’s 50 billion won, I’ll put my all in it no matter what it is. Nothing’s impossible.
Q: Even if idols want to date, they never have any girlfriends. Do you think people believe that statement?
A: Whether they believe it or not, we’re happily playing between ourselves, so if they have something to say about that then…
Q: Are idols not allowed to date?
A: I think that too. ‘Why aren’t idols allowed to date? We’re people too. We’re in our 20’s, which is when you should be enjoying that, but why are we supposed to be like this and not enjoy it?’ But it seems like fans will feel like they’ve been betrayed if we were to say we’re dating.
Q: If you were to pick out something that girls do that you don’t understand, what would it be?
A: There’s something called ‘dapjungneo’. It’s a shortened way of saying, ‘The answer is already there, you just have to reply’. For example, when it’s just guys talking and they say “I look like someone”, we would honestly say, “You don’t look like them at all. They’re much better”. But it seems like girls can’t tell them that they don’t look alike when one of them goes, “I heard that I look like someone, but do you think I look like them?”. I was curious about that. Why can’t you just tell them…
Q: If you were to leave Infinite, what would happen?
A: They would probably fail. All of them are short, so something would look off. Like what would kids who are all around that height try to do (laughter).
-
HOYA
Q: From all the clothes you wore onstage, which one did you really dislike?
A: There’s a fishnet jacket that I wore during promotions for this album, but there was a huge hole. We have a dance during the chorus where we hit our jackets with our hands, but my hand keeps going inside the netting. I asked for them to stop making that pattern.
Q: If you were to change one of the elements that make up Infinite, what would it be?
A: Our members’ positions. It’s already been around 3 years since we’ve debuted, but we’ve been safely using the same position since the beginning even when we’re recording. I hope that would could try out various things. I believe that you have to give a variety of opportunities to the members in order for their hidden potentials to come out.
Q: What are you currently most fearful of?
A: When I feel that my future has been set in stone. They say the average span of an idol is 3~4 years, and there are also cases where it doesn’t work out for people after the idol group disbands. Although I’m definite that it won’t happen to us, I feel worried when I think about it. Even the fact that our plans in 1~2 years have already been set out is a bit. The future’s fun when you don’t know what will happen, but since it’s set out like that. I get worried when I think about whether or not I’ll have to continue doing the same thing without any color after 1~2 years.
Q: What makes you angry?
A: Looking down on me. But I feel like that’s also my motivation. When I said that I would become a singer when I was younger, I was constantly looked down upon. Whenever that happened, I told myself ‘I’ll become successful and ignore them’.
Q: Something you can’t understand about yourself?
A: I noticed that my emotions go back and forth a lot after we debuted. On some days, I would feel bad the whole day for no reason, and on other days, I would be happy. I also think I feel stressed about what is shown in front of the public. I don’t really know the reason either.
Q: Are you the type to tell people what you’re thinking?
A: I usually think about it myself. During a drinking session, one of my friends started lamenting on their misfortune. I’ve also tried that before, but I just felt empty from it. That’s why I don’t really talk.
Q: Even if idols want to date, they never have any girlfriends. Do you think people believe that statement?
A: They probably don’t believe it. Haha. I’ve never had a girlfriend after debuting, but I’ve met up with friends that I knew from a long time ago. But whenever I meet them, I get anxious that someone will see us, and I always thought, ‘I shouldn’t be acting like this right now’. I still don’t want to have a girlfriend yet.
Q: If you could interview someone, who would you like to interview?
A: Admiral Lee Soonshin. There’s a story that he didn’t die from getting shot with an arrow to the stomach, so I want to ask him about that.
-
L
Q: What was the last thing you bought?
A: I was tired before, so I bought and drank a Red Bull.
Q: You take pictures often, but is there something you wish to take a picture of that you haven’t done so yet?
A: We moved around a lot today because our schedule was tight, but on our way from Mokdong to Yeouido, I saw that a lot of cherry blossoms have bloomed. I want to take pictures of spring flowers.
Q: Are you a free person?
A: I wish to become free, and I’m also free in reality. Compared to the other members, I don’t think the company restricts me as much. Although being free is good, I wish that they would occasionally hold me back (laughter). I don’t really know how to explain this feeling, but I want to hear something like “Can’t you not go out for today?”. Haha.
Q: Does being a member of Infinite make you feel like your dream has come true?
A: I achieved my dream after debuting. But my dream changes every year. My dream for this year is to increase my abilities and allow our team to be known more publicly.
Q: Aren’t you guys known publicly enough?
A: When I say public, I mean for people to say ‘their albums are always the best albums’ when they think of Infinite. I wish to become a group where if we release a new song, people would think to listen to it at least once.
Q: What’s a song by another idol that felt fresh to the point where you felt like you were hit on the head?
A: The most refreshing one was SHINee’s ‘Sherlock’. Their choreography and the fact that they mixed two songs approached me as a new try.
Q: What makes you angriest?
A: Even if I get angry, I get over it quickly because my blood type is O. However, I can’t stand watching when a guy treats a girl badly.
Q: If you were to pick out something that girls do that you don’t understand, what would it be?
A: Getting upset without any specific reason. I don’t know the reasons as to why girls get upset.
Q: Something you wouldn’t be able to do even if someone gave you 10 billion won?
A: Leaving Infinite. Because each and every day is fun, I don’t think I would be able to exchange that for money. Also, I can’t buy these members by giving money.
Q: If you were to objectively grade your singing and dancing skills?
A: It’s still incomplete to grade myself with points. However, I can say that last year was better than the year before, this year was better than last year, and next month will be better than this month.
-
DONGWOO
Q: Aren’t you tired?
A: Before I close my eyes, I believe that I need to do my best.
Q: You often hear that you’re random, but what side do you think people see before calling you random?
A: My eating style or my positive tone. Because I eat slowly, I often hear, “Are you making the food and eating it”. Even when they finish their meals and are resting or brushing their teeth, I’m still eating. I’m generally slow in everything.
Q: Have you ever felt resentment towards being slow?
A: When I realized emotions late. I’m also slow at being aware of my surroundings. In high school, there was a time where I was late in realizing whether I liked someone or not.
Q: Something you wouldn’t be able to do even if someone gave you 10 billion won?
A: I wouldn’t be able to betray someone. However, if you gave me 10 billion won, I’m okay with even doing a nude pictorial. Haha. If it’s 10 billion won, I’ll even be able to buy the dream car that I want to buy.
Q: What’s your dream car?
A: A Lamborghini. With its engine that shakes the heart of males, it isn’t just called a bull for nothing. My wish is to hold its steering wheel.
Q: If you were to recruit a producer or musician that you wish to have for Infinite’s album, who would it be?
A: I want to try working with Chris Brown. I really like Chris Brown’s songs like ‘Strip’. I like that unique feeling that’s comforting yet exciting. Listen to it. It’s a bit racy though. The lyrics.
Q: What is Infinite’s next step?
A: The owners of music. Although it’s vague to talk about our next step since music has no limits, I wish to become the owner of music. Woohyun would write lyrics, Hoya and I would write the rap, and Sunggyu hyung would compose. I want to become an owner of a song like that. Making music by writing lyrics, composing, and arranging, then L would take pictures and create an album jacket to suit the music, and pick a concept then film a music video. I want to work on an album where we become the owners from start to finish. But experience is still more important than anything else. I especially think an experience with love is important. “Everyone, I’m open.”
Q: Even if idols want to date, they never have any girlfriends. Do you think people believe that statement?
A: Although it’s up to them whether they believe it or not, you’ll know just by seeing us. Our desires, or wait no, the emotions that haven’t been fulfilled aren’t able to be held back, and we explode things like that on air. I think that’s proof enough.
Q: Are idols not allowed to date?
A: Its not that we’re not allowed to date, but if you look at our schedule, you can see that we’re too busy trying to sleep to think about dating or anything else. We’re really out of breath. (As he shows me the schedule) I’m sorry. Did my emotions explode out too much? I was just really frustrated… I’ll repeat the question back at you then. Would you be able to meet a guy with a schedule like this?
Q: Something your friends say the most to you?
A: “You’re really!”

To me, Hoya is reliableness.
In my opinion, Hoya is 2nd in my Infinite ranking.
The aegyo (T/N: Aegyo is acting cute) know-how I want to teach to Hoya is to speak without stuttering.
The good point when I’m with Hoya is accuracy, the bad point is that it’s crowded…
The moment I felt I was communicating through telepathy with Hoya is when we’re tidying up.
If I could switch soul with Hoya for a day, I would ask to try to sleep.
As a proverb maniac, the proverb I want to let Hoya hear is?
Patience is bitter but its fruit is sweet!

To me, Dongwoo is a man with thick lips.
In my opinion, Dongwoo is 3rd in my Infinite ranking.
The variety know-how I want to teach to Dongwoo is to speak without stuttering.
The good point when I’m with Dongwoo is that he laughs even at the gags I throw, the bad point is that there isn’t really one…
The moment I felt I was communicating through telepathy with Dongwoo is when we were ordering food.
If I could switch soul with Dongwoo for a day, I would pray to switch back.
As a rhyme machine, if you where making a rhyme just for Dongwoo?
Dongwoo is my dongwoo. (T/N: “dongwoo” means “like-minded friend”/”fellow member” in Korean)

The skilled one who is shaking the industry of K-Pop with Infinite
Former musician manager of Lee Seunghwan, Toy, Epik High, Nell, Jisun, etc

“Infinite’s charm is their integrity. When working with singers, there are times where you’re not harmonized with the producer’s mind. But thankfully, with Infinite it harmonized well. There were days where they couldn’t rest for even an hour a day but they followed me without a word. I think that the key to success is the strong integrity wanting to fill their lacking points.”
Lee Jungyeop, Woollim Entertainment’s CEO, is shaking the K-Pop industry with the 7-membered idol group Infinite. Infinite is composed of Kim Sunggyu, Jang Dongwoo, Nam Woohyun, Hoya, Lee Sungyeol, L, Lee Sungjong. They appeared in 2010 when DBSK, Super Junior, Big Bang, 2PM, BEAST, etc were promoting. When the fierce competition started between K-Pop idol groups whom each had different characteristics such as ‘beast-dols’ image, Infinite were armed with the charm of a perfectly choreographied dance and a natural visual. After the success of their dance track ‘Be Mine’, Infinite released ‘Only Tears’ and ‘The Chaser’ and reached the ‘A-class’ after only 3 years.
“Being able to read well the public’s trend was the result of being a former manager. I thought that I was doing well the business of reading the feelings between people but now that I look back to it I think that my decisions were right.”
“Aside from Yoon Jongshin, I think you were with all the singers that are referred to as musicians.” CEO Lee Jungyeop hears this kind of praise often. In the middle of the 90’s, CEO Lee Jungyeop set up the equipment for Lee Seunghwan’s concert, then he started to be Lee Seunghwan’s road manager, and after that he was by the side of Toy, Kim Janghoon, Lee Sora, Kim Dongryul, Epik High, etc. It’s been already close to 20 years since he started working as a manager.
CEO Lee Jungyeop said that he “opened his ears” as he worked with musicians for a long time. As he was with musicians while they were working all night long, he got to learn the rythm and beats, and feel the trend. He got ears recognizing music thanks to his senses. CEO Lee Jungyeop has big strengths such as his plans anticipating the future even if Infinite is the one of the most outstanding groups not only in Korea but in Japan as well right now, his tenacity to handle the work, his pioneering spirit breaking walls.

When CEO Lee Jungyeop created ‘Woollim’ in 2003, Kim Dongryul was in the company. To a lot of people, it meant that it would become a music company making music that wil cause a ‘tremor’ (T/N: Woollim in Korean means tremor/echo). When the company just got established, it secured its spot with the success of Kim Dongryul followed by Epik High’s. In 2005, Epik High became independant and Nell enlisted in the army so the company experienced management difficulties. That’s when he aimed to develop with K-Pop groups.
“When we were filming for the music video of Infinite’s ‘Be Mine’, I had to get back the deposit money from the officetel to get the semi-basement practice room. It rained a lot and I was bailing the water out with my hands and I sighed thinking ‘People call me a successful producer and I have to do this?’. But because Infinite’s song was really good, I believed it would be successful.”
Lately, he is constantly on the move to get an office building and leave the company office on the first floor of a villa in Seoul, Mapo-gu Seongsan-dong. To set up Woollim Entertainment’s new base with a practice room and a recording room, he is searching all around the vicinity of Seongsan-dong.
“Right now, no matter where we release a K-Pop group on the world, we are armed with the best singing skills and dance abilities. This year, I’m planning to try a glocalization and have Infinite collaborate with a Japanese singer. Since it’s possible to overcome language difficulties, I feel like it’s going to be another year in which we’ll make a leap forward.”

They threw away the ‘synchronized choreography’. They took off the stage outfits that fit their bodies perfectly. They forgot the other five members for a moment. Infinite’s hiphop unit, INFINITE H, formed by Dongwoo and Hoya appeared with an image totally different from their fundamentals. They rap as if they were singing and made their stage unique by moving their bodies to the groove. Moreover, Primary participated as a producer, and many other outstanding musicians such as Zion.T, Beenzino, Dynamic Duo’s Choiza, were mentioned in the first album <FLY HIGH> as they participated in the lyrics, composing and featuring, this album is a refreshing try, we couldn’t find anything similar with the idol groups until now. Dongwoo and Hoya who dreamt of free stages continuously since before their debut told us that their thirst got quenched a little bit only now. And they told us excitedly about the experiences they shared while promoting together as INFINITE H, experiences that the other members don’t know about.
‘Dongwoo & Hoya’ begins

When did you really start working on this album?
Hoya: When we were promoting ‘Paradise’, our CEO told us in KBS <Music Bank>’s waiting room “Do you guys know Primary? You will get to work together on your album”. After that, it was hung fire for approximately 6 months and we started recording the album last summer.
Dongwoo: In Infinite’s first full album <OVER THE TOP>, there’s a song called ‘Crying’ composed by Pe2ny hyung. Hoya and I sang it and a friend named Baby Soul from the same company as us did the featuring; that was the beginning of INFINITE H in my opinion.
Hoya: Truthfully, I thought we’d go by the name ‘Dongwoo & Hoya’. It’s only after the album came out and that our subunit name was confirmed as ‘INFINITE H’ was when I knew. (laughs) At first, we didn’t know either what it meant so we were wondering “What’s the H?”, and it turned out it was ‘Hip hop’. If we just wrote our names, it would have been easier to know who’s singing though. (laughs)

It’s Swagger Time
Dongwoo and Hoya who are known for being playful in INFINITE teamed up totally differently under the common denominator that is hiphop ! These charming two men’s name is INFINITE H. The start is somehow extraordinary.
INFINITE
The unlimited charms of the seven people who seized K-POP!
The fresh boyhood of 2010’s Infinite who have infinite possibilities passed by, and now ‘Trend-dols’ Infinite are coming up as 2012 Asia’s trend. Some time after the endless idol competition began, Infinite, who debuted three years ago, stayed strong on the album market by releasing several songs like ‘Come Back Again’, ‘Hysterie’, ‘Be Mine’, ‘BTD’, ‘The Chaser’, etc; they got first place on each chart program, and as a team who set unprecedented records showing off their surprising success power, they will be able to make it on the concert market as well. They’re reinforcing their sport as ‘Trend-dols’ not only in Korea but overseas as well; from October 22nd to November 11th, from Yokohama to Nagoya, Kobe, Fukuoka, etc, they had in total 8 concerts, with a capacity of 74,000 seats. They ended successfully their big-scale ‘Arena Tour’. It’s a result they accomplished only a year after debuting in Japan; they confirmed that they were worthy of receiving the ‘2011 All K-Pop Award’ for the most evolved artist. As ‘K-Pop representative musicians’ who don’t stick to only one genre but can handle various musical genres, we are going to keep an eye on the hot moves of these seven men who have infinite possibilities.
A unique pose after breaking up. Another obsession for Infinite facing a break up!
Infinite coming back as ‘Chasers’.
INFINITE H revealed the pressure about their first unit album.
On the 23rd, INFINITE H (Dongwoo, Hoya) hard a photoshoot and an interview with At Star1.
Through this interview, INFINITE H revealed the pressure when preparing their first album “We couldn’t even sleep to the extent it was physically painful and we also had a huge psychological pressure”.

Hoya said while shaking his head, “As we were preparing for our comeback, we were also in the midst of tight preparations for KBS2 ‘Immortal Song’” and “To film the music video, we stayed up all night for almost 4 days as well”.
Moreover, Dongwoo looked like he lost a lot of weight due to this various projects carried without any rest.
Dongwoo talked about the behind-the-scene stories saying “I don’t really know why I lost weight” and “I physically lost weight so my pants size changed. Since I’m very skinny now, I’m taking a rest from exercising and I’m eating a lot”.
On the other hand, you will be able to check INFINITE H’s photoshoot and interview in At Star1’s February issue.

Infinite’s hiphop unit Infinite H (Dongwoo, Hoya) showed an uncommon affection toward the fans.
Infinite H met eNEWS right before their latest live broadcast, when we asked them ‘Which stage do you like the most between live broadcasts and prerecordings?’, they replied “We aren’t especially biased toward any of them and we just do our best in the given situation. But since we’re with the fans during the prerecordings, it has more feelings so it’s obviously better”.

Infinite H’s member Hoya said while laughing, “When it hasn’t been long since you did your comeback, prerecordings have a nice side. Because you can work the stage to make it more perfect. But later on, if you promote the same song for 7~8 weeks, there are also times when live broadcasts are better”.
He then added, “Both obviously have their pros and cons but if I put myself in the fans’ shoes, there are more good points about the prerecording”.
Dongwoo said, showing affection for the fans, “Regardless of the stage, I don’t have any anxiety about it. It’s just that for the stage of the prerecording filled with only our fans, even the cheering is different so I can only get strength from it. And I also find the time where you can share even just a few words with the fans next to the stage nice and precious”.
Infinite H is the 7-membered idol group Infinite’s hiphop unit formed by Dongwoo and Hoya. Primary was in charge of the album’s producing and a lot of talented musicians such as Dynamic Duo, Bumkey, Zion.T, Beenzino, etc participated in it so they received comments saying that they showed an exceptional completion as a standard idol unit.

Sunggyu, the leader of ‘Trend-dols’ Infinite starts his intensive work at dawn. Even on the day of the interview, he had to change is schedule several times. In the end, the interview was set at 3PM and could start only after sundown. Sunggyu looked obviously exhausted but he kept on saying “I’m ok” while smiling. He joked saying that when they first debuted “It was our wish to be tired because we have a lot of schedules” remembering for a moment about Infinite’s old image.
This year, Sunggyu had great results personally. He got to debut not as Infinite’s leader but as a solo singer. Through the title track ‘60 Seconds’ with modern rock beats, he could show his rocker spirit as much as he wanted. Sunggyu said “It feels like I’m showing myself only now”. Aside from ‘60 Seconds’ in this album, there are a lot of various songs. Including ‘41 Days’, the song he personally wrote, there’s the acoustic version of ‘Only Tears’ that garnered interest during Infinite’s concert, ‘Shine’ that is a gift from Nell’s Kim Jongwan, etc, by showing music with various colors, he tried to transform. As if he was leaving on a trip to find his other self, the name of the album is also ‘Another Me’.
When asked about the solo singer’s title song, Sunggyu commented “It was a work where I could enjoy my freedom”. “I felt more freedom than when I’m working as Infinite. When I was promoting in Infinite, I also tried to show a new image but this challenge was different than before. Should I say it was freedom through rock? It was a refreshing challenge.”
As soon as we asked him to choose the best song of this album, he chose ‘41 Days’. Sunggyu said “It’s the song where I tried writing lyrics for the first time and the melody matches me well. It’s the best song to me”.
Sunggyu is the first Infinite member to go solo. When we asked him which member was the most envious, he chose his roommate, Woohyun. “I think that Woohyun who’s in chage of the vocals in the team is envious. Since he’s my roommate we talk often but I’m coming home late because of the solo activities these days, so I think it’s even more like that” and after saying that while laughing, he counted on his fingers “Since he’s my roommate since before we debuted, he’s also a friend-like dongsaeng (T/N: Friend as in friend with the same age). He’s a roommate worth 100 points who supports me no matter what I do”.
These days, collaborations are the trend in the K-Pop industry. We also asked to Sunggyu if there was a singer he wanted to sing with. “I always wanted to sing with Nell seniors but since they gave me a song as a gift I was really happy. Next time, if I get the opportunity, I want to collaborate with the band Pia.”
Infinite has the nickname of ‘Trend-dols’. But it’s not a group that got popular as soon as they debuted. In 2010, they released their debut album ‘First Invasion’ but they didn’t get significant results. They released another single but the reactions weren’t really good. When promoting for their second mini-album ‘Evolution’ with the title song ‘BTD’, they set their color as ‘Choreography-dols’, their single ‘Nothing’s Over’ exploded and they quickly rose as Idols we have to focus on. With the song ‘Be Mine’ they settled as top idols, and Infinite were very active. Their song ‘The Chaser’ even got 1st place in this year’s K-Pop chart selected by the American Billboard. As the leader who must’ve been more frustrated than anyone else, it can only be a result to be proud of for Sunggyu.
“When we first debuted I was very frustrated. Then we had the song ‘BTD’ and I thought ‘That’s it’. I thought it would do really well. But it didn’t get as known as I thought it would. The greed slowly disappeared and we released the single ‘Nothing’s Over’ without any expectations and it did well so I got hope. Truthfully, a group like Infinite sings a lot of songs that are melody centered so it could look old. Luckily, there were a lot of good songs this year, the concert, the dance, the styling, etc everything matched us well.”
They got popular but the rumors also grew. “Infinite lost their original goal” “After getting popular they have no manners” a lot of rumors like these spread around them. “It’s true that we got busier than when we debuted. The feeling we had before, thinking ‘We have to work hard’, didn’t disappear but after getting popular, there were a few rumors saying so. The 7 of us lived together for 3 years and we still talk to each other a lot. We do our best to be polite toward juniors, seniors, everyone. But when I hear that we lost our original goal, it makes me very upset. There’s no way I can explain it to each one of them, right? I’m actually the type to be very shy so when I wait by myself in the waiting room with many groups, I get shy and I can’t greet them well. But I think that people could misunderstand it as me being arrogant. I have to do my best to change more actively, of course (laughs).”
While we were at it, we asked. Does the leader of an idol group have a girlfried? “I’m an adult as well, I want to have a girlfriend (laughs). But rather than that, I want to give a house to my parents living in Jeonju. I said I was going to sing, I didn’t go to the university at 20 and went to Seoul thoughtlessly, so it made them very upset. My wish is to buy a house where my parents can live comfortably.”
Sunggyu said 2012 was an unforgettable year. He said it was because he released a solo album and held Infinite solo concerts in Korea and Japan. He said while smiling that he was happy he could improve as Infinite’s leader and as the solo singer Kim Sunggyu. From now on, which singer will he want to develop?
“‘As a singer, what do I have to become?’ ‘Where do I have to get 1st place?’ I don’t have special nor definite goals like these. I just want to become a singer who will be active steadily and for a long time. I want to let a lot of people listen to my voice through songs.”

7-member group Infinite’s leader Kim Sunggyu (22) packed his solo debut album with his charms. On the 19th of last month, Kim Sunggyu released his solo album ‘Another Me’ in two months after his debut and opened the door widely for his solo promotions. Through ‘Another Me,’ which he surprisingly released without even letting his fans know, he was able to show his expression of sexiness and sadness as well as remarkable vocal skills, heating up the cold winter’s air.
If through title song, ‘60 seconds’, he shows the image of a rocker full of sensibility, with ‘Shine’, that was given by the leader of the rock band Nell, he tickles our ears with a pretty and dreamy sound, confirming his innate musicality. We met Kim Sunggyu who introduced his solo album “Through this album, I wanted to show my own musics I wanted to show during all this time. I wanted to show people ‘So Infinite’s leader can do this kind of music as well’”.
-You stood on stage all by yourself. You must’ve felt strange.
“I was really very nervous. I wanted to stand on stage with the rock genre I liked since I was in middle school, my dream finally came true. I was half thrilled, half pressured.”
-Introduce briefly your album.
“The title song ‘60 Seconds’ was made by the composers Sweetune who made songs such as Infinite’s ‘The Chaser’, ‘Be Mine’, I received ‘Shine’ as a gift from Nell’s member, Kim Jongwan senior. I actually got influenced a lot as I grew up listening to Nell’s music. But for this album, I got to work with Nell so I was really in heaven. There are 6 tracks in the album with songs like ‘41 Days’ which I wrote, the general mood of the album is modern rock. I worked on this album thinking ‘Let’s find my won style’. I think I matured and earned a lot of experience as well.”
-The members must be envious.
“But they still all cheered for me so I was thankful. L supported me especially actively. Even before filming the music video of ‘60 Seconds’, he told me first ‘Since leader hyung is releasing a solo album, I’ll appear in the music video!’. I was thankful but sad at the same time. The story is the core of the music video do the male lead, L, appeared more than me singing. I was going to be the lead. Haha.”
-How was it working with Nell’s Kim Jongwan?
“He praised me and gave me a lot of advices. I was really happy because he praised me saying the feeling of my voice and the emotions’ expression was good. As much as I got praised, I also received a lot of stingy advices. Because I have a lot of lacking points, Kim Jongwan senior had a hard time. I’m thankful and sorry.”
-The vocals’ feeling is totally different following the song.
“Following the mood of the song, I sing whether with a rough feeling or with a clear voice. When I sing, I’m usually my voice has a really faint style. I hated the clear voice I had during high school, when I was in the school band as the vocalist. So I practiced a lot to make it sound rough and deep. With some time, my voice got better and now I don’t force my voice to make it deep. Sometimes, depending on the song’s mood, the vocal’s feeling changes.”
-How was the Arena Tour you had this October?
“We held the concert ‘2012 Arena Tour in Japan’, starting from October 27th at Yokohama in Japan, to Nagoya, Kobe, and Fukuoka. 60,000 Japanese fans came to see us on stage. The fans who were going wild when seeing us looked like it was ‘a spectacle they can’t believe’. I also received a meaningful gift. It was 12 T panties decorated with animal faces at the front. I was happy when I received the gift but in the letter, there was the message ‘Make sure to wear it please’. Haha. I’m worried about how I have to wear it.”
-The plans to promote your solo album in Japan?
“Don’t exist yet. If I get the occasion, I want to promote in Japan as well.”
-Something you want to do before the year ends.
“I want to enjoy a fun year-end party. I want to have a Christmas or year-end party with my family, the members and my friends to make unforgettable memories. I’m no different from other people in their 20’s. Haha.”

Seven boys with strong personalities gathered together in 2010 to form a team. Without realizing it, it’s been already 3 years since their debut, since they entered the music industry as Infinite. On November 11th, 2012, it was their 900th day since their debut. They showed their slowly maturing image and accomplished the splendid achievement that is the ‘Arena Tour’ a year only after their Japanese debut. Infinite are dreaming to be, not ‘flash’ idols [T/N: Idols disappearing quickly] but idols who are in constant evolution and development. We’re looking forward to their radiant future that will show their infinite possibilities. //Main editor
Infinite is a group that moves like one body. We’re not only talking about their image on stage that is remembered thanks to the synchronized choreography without any empty moments. Their bodies suffered together since predebut and the teamwork they accumulated is naturally carved on each of their bodies, so wherever they are, the name of the team is coming before their own. Kim Sunggyu is the leader of this Infinite. We thought he was already busy enough performing constantly while going back and forth between Korea and Japan and being chased down by his dongsaengs on variety programs, he released his first solo album he worked diligently on, ‘Another Me’, on the 19th. With the fact that he’s the first one to start the solo promotions among the Infinite members and that he worked with the band he had always looked up to when he was young, Nell, he just concluded “I was lucky”. And while we wanted to hear for a long time his own story, he started to talk about the members again at some point. During an early morning interview, Kim Sunggyu didn’t forget to say what he had to say as a singer releasing his first solo album and as the leader of a team at the same time even while rubbing his eyes not fully awaken.
“These days I call Hoya ‘hyung’.”
The member L appeared in the music video for Kim Sunggyu who’s the first Infinite member to release a solo album while the other members came on the filming set to support him. Kim Sunggyu started off the solos not as an actor but as a singer, he recently revealed his burden about it during his interview with Newsen.

The member L from the same group appeared as the main character in the music video of Kim Sunggyu’s title song, ‘60 Seconds’. When we asked him if he didn’t think about being the main character since it’s his solo song, he said “Truthfully, I didn’t want to do it but when actually seeing it, I thought that I wanted to do it”.
Kim Sunggyu said playfully “While watching the video, when I saw that I wasn’t appearing much, I thought that it was a bit sad. I did think ‘I wish I did it’ but even if I said I wanted to do it, maybe the company wouldn’t let me do so. But I still wanted to try it” and he revealed a behind the scene story “Actually, starting from when it was decided that I would release an album, L directly said he as going to appear in the music video so I didn’t have the time to say I’d do it. Even if he was busy, he obstinately said he was going to do it”. He then added like a unique throwaway “I’m thankful. He did well”.
Infinite started individual activities for some time already. It was the birth of a new acting-dol when Hoya appeared in the drama ‘Reply 1997’ and got praised for it, L who’s constantly acting is actually appearing in the sitcom ‘What Is Mom’.
“I can’t watch all of the episodes of L’s sitcom but I watched the first episodes. I watched ‘Reply 1997’ as well and ‘The Thousandth Man’. (But I couldn’t see the one where I appeared in.) I don’t watch all the episodes of the dramas the members appear in but I always make sure to watch the first episode. I don’t know well either so I didn’t give them any acting advices but I like watching them. When I see L do the dramas, concerts, and even Infinite’s schedules and endure all of this well, I’m thankful as a hyung.”
During this year’s SBS ‘Gayo Daejun’, Hoya and Woohyun are going to go up on stage not as Infinite but as new groups they’ll form with members from other idol groups. Kim Sunggyu said “I’m somewhat bitter and sad but these teams aren’t going to last so [it’s alright]”.
“But I still hope for our members to shine and do well in these teams. I’ll also support them.. I’m used to them being in our team so I’m actually worried hen thinking they’re going to be in another team. Woohyun is in the blue team with Sweetune and our team also had to take care of the choreography. Hoya is in a team with people we didn’t get to work with until now so I’m a bit worried. But I think they’ll earn a lot of experience from it.”
When talking about Hoya, he couldn’t not talk about the combi play the two people showed this year. Kim Sunggyu said about the their rankings “These days I call Hoya ‘hyung’” and “Hoya also treats me like a dongsaeng”.
“I joke around calling him hyung because he’s popular but doesn’t Hoya have very good skills? Rapping, singing, dancing, acting, he can do everything. When we’re together I say that I’m above them but I can’t go against these friends. A little while ago, when we were in Japan, I went to eat with Hoya at a Korean restaurant, the owner didn’t recognize me but told Hoya he watched his drama well. I told myself it had a huge effect. After that I couldn’t treat him carelessly and he looked different? And Hoya is very playful so he jokes really well with me calling himself ‘Ho-actor’, ‘Uptrend’ and such. On the outside I say “Don’t make me laugh you’re not there yet’ but there are a lot of times where I’m surprised. I thought that his drama did really well so he has a lot of popularity. When he was doing the drama, there was always this kind of reaction for Hoya no matter where we went.”
Seeing that the hyung and dongsaeng switched place between Kim Sunggyu and Hoya, Infinite had a lot of reactions saying they were funny when switching places starting from when they did the variety program ‘Ranking King’, like it was Infinite’s only gag code.
“That friend (Hoya) says that he’s a manly and dark guy but he’s really a Gyeongsangdo namja (T/N: Gyeonsang is a Korean province, men from Gyeongsang are said to be very manly). He’s cold, doesn’t express himself well, he’s introverted and doesn’t really say when he doesn’t like something, but even so, at some point he must’ve found entertaining to make fun of me. He did his broadcast well and came home saying ‘Today I did well’ the dongsaengs were praising him and without even knowing it I was feeling proud too. He also teased me sometimes but starting from then I think I got excited. It was making me more confident no matter where I went.”

Infinite’s leader, Kim Sunggyu, revealed his thoughts right before his first solo stage.
Kim Sunggyu met with a reporter on the 23rd at the waiting room of KBS 2TV ‘Music Bank’ and showed a happy smile, saying, “I’m really happy for a solo album that I’ve been working hard on for a long time to be released. I’m also very happy to be able to let everyone listen to new music.”
Kim Sunggyu, who was the first to reveal a solo album among Infinite, pushed away his burdens by adding, “I can’t say that I don’t have any burdens. But because of the fact that I’m able to show a new side of me, my anticipation is larger than my burdens.”
The early released song, ‘Shine’, from Kim Sunggyu’s first solo album <Another Me> is a song that was gifted to Kim Sunggyu by his role model, Nell’s Kim Jonghwan. Along with the fact that this solo album has the musical colors of Kim Sunggyu as a musician and not a member of Infinite, it is also a pleasant album for listeners that enjoyed Nell’s music.
To this, Kim Sunggyu revealed his affection towards his seniors, Nell, “I went over to Nell’s recording studio not too long ago and the hyungs said one phrase of, ‘You’re doing well, right?’, but I gained an immense amount of strength from it. I visited them after finishing Infinite’s concert in Japan, but I was really thankful to hear that one phrase of ‘Are you doing well’ even if it may seem like nothing.”
When I joked that netizens are saying, ‘Kim Sunggyu is a fan of Nell that succeeded’, Kim Sunggyu shyly smiled, “I think those words are right.” He admitted to the rumor by saying, “I still like Nell’s music and I’m still a fan of Nell’s music. It’s definitely not something to be embarrassed about.”
Finally, I asked Kim Sunggyu what his mental pillars, Nell, mean to him just like ‘Radio Star’ (T/N: a talk show). What is Nell to Kim Sunggyu? “They are people I admire. They are the people who allowed me to like music ever since I was younger.”
You can feel Kim Sunggyu’s unique emotional voice and explosive vocal abilities through Kim Sunggyu’s debut song, ‘60 Seconds’, which is a song with a modern rock sound.
Meanwhile, after performing his first solo song, ‘60 Seconds’, on November 23rd at KBS 2TV ‘Music Bank’, Kim Sunggyu will be having a short but strong promotion period of 3 weeks.
